When I started playing fastpitch in the summer of the second grade, I instantly became in love with the sport. I’d tried soccer and figure skating, but they never came close. Perhaps it’s because when my mom was pregnant with me, they’d go to Toronto Blue Jays baseball games in Detroit, Arizona, Baltimore, and many other places. But it also could be because my middle name is ‘Jai’, after the team (the ‘i’ is to make it more feminine). My parents are die-hard fans, what can I say?
I played house league from when I was seven until I was twelve, then started playing for a more competitive team; the Wyoming Lady Wranglers. This year I decided to play for the London Lightning. I travel an hour to get there, but the coaching and experiences I’ve had so far have been amazing. I was really struggling with hitting at the beginning of the year, but with plenty of practice and help from both coaches and teammates, I am starting to see positive changes. One of my favourite memories was playing in the Ontario Summer Games in 2014. We got to stay in the University of Windsor’s residence and play against Tier One teams. Our little farm team didn’t win any games, but the experience is one that all of us will remember forever. I’m very proud to be playing for Ryerson and I can’t wait to get to know my teammates and coaches. I am excited for the season to start and to put on the Rams jersey.
